Independent Legal Advice

Clients often ask us to provide independent legal advice about agreements drafted by their partners’ lawyers. Sometimes this request comes along with the suggestion that the independent legal advice should be brief, because the agreement is “simple” or because the parties are getting married or moving in together imminently.

Family law agreements are almost never simple, and always deal with complicated issues with long-ranging effects on peoples’ lives. We encourage clients to take the time needed to negotiate an agreement that is fair to both of them, and do what we can to accommodate clients’ time lines.
